The ARS needle (ARS = AIR Release System) consists of a thin catheter containing a hollow needle. The whole thing is in a narrow container similar to a fountain pen. Unscrewing the cap makes the needle accessible. <\/p>\n

Decompression of the chest cavity is essential as a life-saving measure in the event of a tension pneumothorax. The trained paramedic inserts a combination of catheter and hollow needle (the ARS needle) into the upper chest cavity. The air that has entered can escape through the channel created in this way and collapse of the lungs and circulatory shock are prevented. After the air has escaped, the hollow needle is removed while the catheter remains in the injured person’s chest. <\/p>\n
